A Mid Pacific Accent refers humorously to the cultivated or acquired version of the English language that blends American and British English without being predominantly either (the Mid-Atlantic Accent). By looking at some of the best of new Australian art here in a Los Angeles contemporary art museum we hope to see where their idioms and references meet with and coincide with American ones in a form that we have called Mid Pacific Accents.
When people speak of the Pacific Rim there is often the implication that they are referring to Japan and other Asian nations. But there exists a quirky relationship between America and Australia that is often passed over with that Pacific Rim notion of geography.
Both countries have multiple linkages that are genuine and deep as well as humorous. Their pasts are linked to Britain but they share the iconic image of the cowboy as the rugged individual who stands independently of the rest of society. They share a common language of English while happily mutating it to their own needs. Sydney/Melbourne and Los Angeles both stand as their respective countries destination points for tourism and for new centers for art making in a sprawling range of island pockets of activity.
A sunny climate with a slightly surf influenced attitude makes them optimistic cities looking to the future, leaving London and New York as part of the old world - in art terms anyway. This exhibition brings together some of the young leading lights of this Aussie Renaissance to present a survey of contemporary art that will highlight the similarities and differences in the art making practices of this 'half-brother' nation from our own
